Israel Cultural Exchange

AFT-Maryland President Marietta English joined with other AFT national officers and representatives for a visit to Israel. There, they participated in a cultural exchange about best practices in educating young people. The trip had significant importance as the group also engaged with students and teachers at Jerusalem’s Hand-in-Hand School.  The school promotes integration and tolerance among the Arab and Jewish residents of Israel.

UHP Members – Voluntary Reductions

The Voluntary Schedule Reduction Program has been in existence since 1991.  It is located in the State Personnel Act, Chapter 67. After having reviewed the documents, the questions regarding accruals and state service time have been satisfactorily answered. UHP members should be cautious and carefully review what their personal financial needs are before volunteering for this plan.

As was answered in the Act, accruals of sick, vacation, and state service time do continue as if you were still working your current schedule.

New State Requirements for Certified Teachers and Teaching Assistants

Starting July 1, a new state law requires all permanently or professionally certified teachers and Level III teaching assistants working in public schools or BOCES to register online with the State Education Department. All certified teaching professionals, including retirees, should become familiar with the new ruling and take steps to retain certifications.
