Shakopee Education Association is a union and professional association of over 600 teaching and learning professionals working together to bring a world-class education to the students in the Shakopee Public Schools (MN ISD 720 - http://www.shakopee.k12.mn.us/).

In 2009, the SEA  celebrated its 50th year as a member of the American Federation of Teachers and took that opportunity to articulate the values our organization espouses:

LFT says “No” to education funding plan

(Baton Rouge – January 6, 2014) Concerned about the legality of some changes to education funding as well as its lack of guaranteed pay raises for educators, Louisiana Federation of Teachers President Steve Monaghan today cast one of the only two votes against a plan proposed by the state’s Minimum Foundation Program Task Force.

Meeting for Teachers Considering Retirement

There will be an informational meeting for teachers considering retirement this year at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, January 23, 2014. The purpose of this meeting is to explain the benefits available from Rush-Henrietta in retirement and to answer questions about retirement procedures. The meeting will be held in the Transportation and Operations Center conference room, located at 1133 Lehigh Station Road.

Inequality for All

The EWTA (East Williston Teachers' Association) will be hosting a professional development opportunity for their members and would like to extend it to our membership as well. 

On January 27th, 2014 from 4 to 7 the EWTA will be offering a 3 hour workshop that includes viewing and discussing the film Inequality For All.  The screening and discussion will take place at The Wheatley School, 11 Bacon Road, Old Westbury, NY 11596.

AFT-Maryland Committee Targets Legislative Objectives

At its December 16th meeting, the AFT-Maryland Legislative Committee identified three major areas on which it will focus during the 2014 Maryland legislative session. The committee agreed that the Maryland pension plan, workplace violence prevention, and the Correctional Officers Bill of Rights will be its primary areas of concentration.

AFT and First Book Distribute 1 Million Books

The American Federation of Teachers, in cooperation with the First Book program, announced that it has distributed 1 million books to teachers, low-income students, community and civic groups. Those books included 400,000 books distributed in the Baltimore area.
